The Bar T Bar ranch contains a meteor crater site that is 3 miles wide and is as deep as the Washington Monument is tall. The meteor that hit earth was estimated to be 150 feet wide and weighed as much as a volkswagon bug. Since its discovery, NASA has trained numerous astronauts at the base of the crater because of its likeness to the moon terrain.
This is a great picture of Flagstaff from Meteor Crater. The far left peak is called Humphreys Peak and Ana climbed that this summer when she came to visit us at Hay Lake. The clinic I'm working at sits at the base of the mountains on the far right.
I had told my family that the drive to the fault line (the crack) would only take 15 minutes, but 1 hour later we have passed through 6 pastures 5 gates and a lot of bumpy dirt road we arrived! The fault line runs through the middle of the ranch and extends many miles to the west. This portion Wyatt is at drops at least 500 feet! We dropped numerous rocks down, listening until they came to a loud THUD after falling for over 45 seconds!!
There are many parts of the fault line that are highly exposed like this one. There is an old tale, that a cowboy working on the ranch many years ago, was chasing after a calf that broke free from the herd. The calf was at a full sprint and came to a screeching halt but the cowboy and his horse were unable to stop and plummeted over the edge.
Of course, Wyatt tells this story of the cowboy falling to his death and then decides to add years to my life by jumping over the edge!! My brother is no help either, because he encourages him by saying "Yea, I will take your picture!"
Wyatt had ventured down into this area before with an Arizona grass and range specialist and they came upon a type of grass that is found nowhere else on the ranch (340,000 acres).
Dad was able to find all kinds of really neat antique glass and cans on the pasture near the fault line. "Collector items" he would call them
